Nearly 50 per cent of rape cases registered in Panipat this year have been found to be fake, according to data revealed through an RTI filed by social activist Savita Arya.

As per the details, out of 84 rape cases registered in the past nine months, 42 were cancelled after thorough police investigation. Similarly, 22 of 121 cases under the POCSO Act and 15 of 40 molestation cases were also found to be false.

Police officials said many such complaints were made due to personal enmity, revenge or other disputes.

Social activist Savita Arya said, “Some cases were lodged by women to take revenge or gain personal benefits, which is absolutely wrong. A person falsely accused under severe sections like rape, molestation or POCSO is badly broken in society — it becomes hard for him to live with such allegations.”

Arya said she has written to Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh, urging legal action against women who filed fake complaints. “Strict action should be initiated against such women who misuse the laws,” she added.

SP Bhupender Singh confirmed that while all complaints are initially registered, only after thorough investigation are fake cases cancelled. “In genuine complaints, the accused are arrested immediately,” he said. “I have directed a detailed study of all cancelled cases. If anyone is found to have misused the law, action will be taken against them as per legal provisions.”
