The election for eight municipal corporations, four municipal councils and 21 municipal committees of the state are scheduled for March 2, for which filing of the nomination papers commenced on Monday.

The municipal corporation election will take place in the cities of Faridabad, Gurugram, Manesar, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, and Yamunanagar. The municipal council election will be held in towns of Ambala Sadar, Pataudi, Jatauli Mandi, Thanesar, and Sirsa. Meanwhile, municipal committee elections are slated for Barara, Bawani Khera, Loharu, Siwan, Jakhal Mandi, Farukh Nagar, and others.

In Panipat, the election date has been set for March 9 since the voter lists are not ready.

  • Municipal Committees: These govern smaller towns with a population of less than 50,000.
  • Municipal Councils: These are for mid-sized towns with population ranging from 50,000 to 3 lakh.
  • Municipal Corporations: These are for large cities with population exceeding 3 lakh.

What is the election schedule?

  •  Filing of nominations: February 11-17
  •  Scrutiny of nominations: February 18
  • Last date for withdrawal: February 19
  •  Polling date: March 2
  •  Counting of votes: March 12

What is the expenditure limit for candidates?

The expenditure limit for candidates have been revised as follows:

  • Mayoral candidates: Rs 30 lakh (up from Rs 25 lakh)
  • Municipal Corporation ward members: Rs 7.5 lakh (up from Rs 6 lakh)
  • Municipal Council Presidents: Rs 20 lakh
  • Municipal Committee Presidents: Rs 12.5 lakh
  • Municipal Council ward members: Rs 4.5 lakh
  • Municipal Committee ward members: Rs 3 lakh
