Y Puran Kumar, a senior IPS officer, died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the state police fraternity in deep shock. His wife, Amneet P Kumar — who was part of the Chief Minister’s delegation on an official visit to Japan — had cut short her trip and returned to Chandigarh on Wednesday afternoon after receiving the news.

Among those who called on the family were Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Development and Panchayat Minister Krishan Lal Panwar, Home Secretary Sumita Misra, and Hansi MLA Vinod Bhayana. The atmosphere at the Sector 24 residence remained sombre as officers and colleagues from the police and civil administration continued to arrive through the day to express grief and solidarity with the family.
