Haryana DGP stresses mission-mode approach to curb cybercrime
A state-level conference on cyber frauds was held in Panchkula on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur. The conference focused on implementing new RBI guidelines issued in November 2024 and January 2025 to tackle the growing menace of cybercrime.
RBI Regional Director Vivek Srivastava and senior officials from around 50 banks and fintech companies, including Google Pay, Paytm, Amazon Pay and PhonePe, participated in the event.
In his address, DGP Kapur emphasised the need for a mission-mode approach to combat cybercrime. “To tackle the challenges related to cybercrime, it is necessary that everyone work with full dedication in mission mode,” he said. He urged bank officials to monitor suspicious transactions and take immediate action when any irregularities are detected.
Kapur directed banks and fintech companies to adhere strictly to the latest RBI guidelines and remain vigilant against fake bank accounts. While commending some banks for their efforts, he stressed the importance of collective action among stakeholders to freeze defrauded funds promptly.
“Only 7% of the defrauded amount was recovered by Haryana Police in September 2023, but this increased to 27% by November 2024,” Kapur noted, highlighting progress. However, he expressed concern over the sharp rise in cybercrime cases. “In 2023, cyber fraud of Rs 602 crore was reported in Haryana, which escalated to Rs 980 crore in 2024. This increase underscores the urgency to curb cybercrime effectively,” he said.
The conference provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss strategies and collaborate on initiatives to address cyber fraud, with a focus on prevention, monitoring and swift action against culprits.
