The officials in the Panchkula Police have confirmed the development. According to sources, one of the reasons for recommending the case was interstate jurisdiction.

Earlier, on October 20, the Haryana Police had booked former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, ex-minister Razia Sultana, for allegedly killing their son Aqil Akhtar. Akhtar’s wife and sister are also accused in the case.

As per the FIR, registered on the complaint of Malerkotla resident Shamshudeen Chaudhary, the police had invoked Section 103 (1) (for murder) and Section 61 (for criminal conspiracy) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Chaudhary submitted the complaint on October 17, stating that Akhtar had died under mysterious circumstances and that there was a “simmering discontent between the deceased and his family”.

His complaint has been reproduced in the FIR. According to it, “On August 27, Aqil publicly posted a video on social media in which he made very serious allegations against his father and his own wife. In the video, he stated that he had discovered illicit relations between his father and his wife, and further alleged that his entire family — including his mother and sister — were conspiring to kill him or to implicate him in a false case. He clearly expressed his apprehension that his life was in danger and that he might be killed by them.”

He had further said, “Now, the news of his sudden death has confirmed his apprehensions. It is clearly a case of foul play. In view of his prior video statement and the serious allegations made therein, the cause of death requires a thorough, fair, and impartial investigation.”

On the other hand, Mustafa had said that his son had been a drug addict for the last 18 years. He had even suggested that he might have died due to a drug overdose.

“He often became violent due to his illness,” Mustafa had told reporters on Wednesday, adding that his family had endured this mental suffering for years. “His condition had worsened to the point where he didn’t understand what he was saying or doing,” he had added.

Regarding Akhtar’s video, he had commented that his son had posted it on social media on August 27 and deleted it two hours later. But some people downloaded it and were now “misusing it to malign the family”.
