The NH-44 turned into a canal at several places while the internal roads, too, were inundated with knee-deep water. Sanjay Chowk, Red Light, Tehsil Camp, grain market, Khadi Ashram and Malik Petrol pump areas on the NH-44 were badly affected. A heavy traffic jam was witnessed on the highway.

The downpour started around 7.15 am today and continued for two hours. Residential and commercial areas, including Model Town, Bishan Saroop Colony, Sukhdev Nagar, main roads of Sectors 11 and 12, Gohana road, Assandh road, Sanoli road and several colonies in the Tehsil Camp area, besides colonies on the outskirts were submerged.

In Model Town, almost all roads were inundated and people had to face inconvenience as many roads are under construction.

The blocked sewerage in some residential and markets has intensified the problem here. The Municipal Corporation (MC) had claimed to have cleaned the city drains ahead of the monsoon season but these claims fell flat today.

Vishal Verma, general secretary, Vyapar Mandal Samiti, said a wall of Shaheed ML Verma Memorial park collapsed during the rain. Two cars got damaged in the incident. Cracks have developed in other newly built walls of the park and they, too, can fall anytime, he added.

He said the drainage system was badly choked in Sectors 11 and 12 and water had accumulated on all internal and main roads, posing problems for residents.
