Concerned over the deteriorating health of veteran farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and to express solidarity with the ongoing farmers’ protests, lawyers of the Bar Association, Hisar, submitted a memorandum to City Magistrate Hari Ram here on Tuesday.

The memorandum was addressed to Governors of Haryana and Punjab, the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Chief Ministers of Haryana and Punjab.

The lawyers expressed serious concern over the government’s lackadaisical approach to the peaceful protests at the Haryana-Punjab border. They said that the prolonged hunger strike by Jagjit Singh Dallewal and the restrictions placed on farmers' movements to Delhi amounts to a violation of their Constitutional Rights. They argued that the right to move freely and protest peacefully is fundamental to Indian democracy and that the denial of these rights undermines the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

The memorandum stated that the farmers had demonstrated their grievances peacefully. It cited past protests at significant locations like the Boat Club, where no disturbances were caused, showcasing the integrity and non-violent nature of the farmers' movement. The lawyers called for the government to approach the farmers’ issues with sensitivity and to engage in dialogue rather than repression.

The memorandum urged the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of Dallewal and to take immediate steps to fulfil the farmers' demand for a legal guarantee of the MSP for their crops. Additionally, it demanded the removal of restrictions on farmers’ movement.
