‘Historic and proud moment for every Haryanvi’, says Surjewala as Justice Surya Kant takes over as 53rd CJI

Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala on Monday described Justice Surya Kant’s elevation as the 53rd Chief Justice of India as a “historic and proud moment for every Haryanvi”, as the senior judge from a small Hisar village took oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for a tenure of nearly 15 months.

Justice Surya Kant was administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu at a brief ceremony in the Durbar Hall. He took the oath in Hindi in the name of God.

Reacting to the swearing-in, Surjewala said the moment was “not just a personal milestone, but a tribute to his humility, perseverance, and dedication”. He underscored Justice Kant’s journey “from a small village in Hisar”, calling it a reflection of the “unfathomable power of courage, belief and hard work”.

Surjewala said the new CJI “is admired across the Bar for his patience and extraordinary memory, and respected on the Bench for his experience, balance, and ability to carry everyone along”.

“May his tenure shine as a model of fairness and justice for all,” he said.
