The newly constructed Astroturf hockey stadium here is becoming increasingly popular among the players of the district. Hockey players from all walks of life are flocking to the facility, much-loved for its top-notch amenities.
The passion for hockey takes over the stadium as the players’ sticks clash and shoes tread the turf during the morning and evening sessions.
Inaugurated by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on January 24 this year, the facility was built under the Smart City project on the Kailash-Kunjpura road. Built at a cost of Rs 18.27 crore, the stadium spans 6.45 acres. The stadium features a blue Astroturf dedicated to competitive matches, and a green Astroturf for practice sessions. Players and coaches opined that playing on an Astroturf ground gave them a new experience that would not only enhance the quality of their game but also instil a sense of competitiveness among them. “We are witnessing a surge in the number of players by the day. We are hopeful that after playing here, our players will compete at national and international levels, even representing the nation,” said Brij Bhushan, a hockey coach. “We really feel like we are playing at an international venue. It has given us the motivation to practice harder and aim higher,” said Sawan, a player. Ankit, another player, said, “It is a game changer for us. It has improved our game.” Vaibhavi, another hockey player, said she had been practicing here for the past two weeks. “I am enjoying playing here. My dream is to achieve something big, and practicing here will help me achieve my goal,” she added. Nikunj, who had been practicing at the stadium for a week, said, “When I came to know about the hockey ground in my vicinity, I was very excited and started playing hockey. I want to play for the country.” Ansh, another player, said, “My dream is to play at the national level. The new ground is a game changer for us. It is great to see so many players coming together.” Deputy Commissioner and Karnal Smart City Ltd CEO Uttam Singh said the stadium authorities’ focus was on providing world-class facilities to the players, and efforts were being made in that direction. “The Astroturf ground is one example in this regard. More sports facilities are likely to start in a couple of months,” he added. Take your experience further with Premium access. Already a Member?
