Kurukshetra, July 27

Unhappy with the delay in the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) elections, the Sikh Samaj Sanstha has called on the community leaders to assemble in large numbers on July 31 in Kurukshetra for deciding the future course of action.

Accusing the state government of being biased towards the Sikh electorate by not conducting the elections, Didar Singh Nalvi, president of the sanstha, said it seemed that the government had no intention of getting the election conducted and was forcing the community to take strict action. A notification regarding the gurdwara polls was issued in February and the election was schedule for March 6 for all 40 wards across the state, the notification was withdrawn in view of the school examinations, till further order.

Nalvi said, “Despite the fact that the 18-month tenure of the nominated committee of the HSGMC expired on May 31, the government is yet to make announcement regarding the election of the committee. A delegation of the Sikh Samaj met Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini on July 19 and we requested him to get the election conducted before the Assembly elections. We were told that after consulting the gurdwara election commissioner, a notification regarding the poll will be issued by July 22, but no notification has been issued yet. Any further delay in the HSGMC poll is not acceptable”.

“The CM should clarify the reason behind not conducting the elections. It has been decided to invite the community leaders for a meeting in Kurukshetra on July 31 to discuss the future course of action. If our demand is not met, the community will be forced to take strict decision and the BJP may face its repercussion in the Assembly elections”, Nalvi said.
