The entire Opposition in state — including the Congress, INLD and JJP — has demanded immediate action and an impartial investigation into the alleged suicide of Dalit IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, whose death has triggered widespread outrage across the state.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda called for a fair and transparent inquiry.

“No culprit should be spared and no innocent should be harmed. It is the state government's responsibility to ensure justice in this case,” Hooda said.

He added that the law and order situation in the state had “completely deteriorated.” “The suicide of such a senior police officer is a very tragic incident. This incident has shaken the entire state. If such a senior police officer is not safe today, one can imagine the plight of ordinary citizens,” he said.

Sirsa MP and former Union minister Kumari Selja termed the incident not just a personal tragedy but a reflection of systemic failure.

“This is not only a personal tragedy but also raises serious questions about the entire administrative system. If an honest officer is compelled to take such an extreme step due to the system's failures, it is deeply concerning,” she said.

Ambala MP Varun Chaudhary visited the officer’s residence in Chandigarh to offer condolences to his wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, assuring her of community support.

“The entire Dalit community stands united with the family,” he said, demanding that Chief Minister Nayab Saini relieve DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur from his duties to ensure a fair investigation. Chaudhary will also submit a memorandum to the Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria seeking a judicial probe into the case.

Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala described the case as “shocking, tragic and deeply heartbreaking.”

“Is the system of Haryana’s BJP government so weak or so prejudiced that even a Dalit IPS officer of IG rank could get neither a hearing nor justice?” he questioned.

JJP national president Dr Ajay Chautala demanded a high-level inquiry, while INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala alleged that atrocities against Dalits had “risen alarmingly” under the BJP rule.

“The Constitution drafted by Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar is being openly violated. The officer had mentioned the discrimination he faced as a Dalit in his suicide note,” he said.

Adding to the political pressure, AICC secretary Pradeep Narwal wrote to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, demanding the arrest of DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, whose name was reportedly mentioned in the officer’s suicide note.

“The mention of the DGP’s name makes it imperative that an immediate, transparent and impartial investigation be conducted, and that those responsible, irrespective of position, be brought to justice,” Narwal stated in his letter.

He urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene to ensure a high-level, independent probe, and sought protection and financial assistance for the bereaved family.
