Illegal mining rampant in Karnal, 29 vehicles seized in 45 days
Illegal mining remains a major issue in Karnal, with authorities seizing 29 vehicles involved in unauthorised mining and transportation over the past one-and-a-half months. Despite ongoing crackdowns, the problem persists, leading to environmental degradation and revenue losses for the state government.
According to data from the Mines and Geology Department Haryana, officials seized nine vehicles (six tractors and three tippers/trucks) in March and 20 vehicles in February. Additionally, seven FIRs were recommended in March, matching the seven FIRs registered in February. A significant amount of fines has also been imposed on the impounded vehicles.
“We have seized 29 vehicles for illegal mining and transportation in February and March. FIRs have been registered under Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals Development Act against those who failed to deposit fines,” said Niranjan Lal, District Mining Officer.
Most vehicles were impounded in Gharaunda and Indri blocks, as well as along Meerut Road, he added. “We are committed to curbing illegal mining and taking strict action against those involved. Our team conducts surprise inspections in different areas to tackle this issue,” he emphasised.
Despite these efforts, illegal mining continues unchecked in several parts of the district, especially along the Yamuna. Residents claim that mining mafias evade authorities by using hidden routes and nighttime operations.
“The mining officials should take more stringent steps to address this menace as illegal mining poses a severe environmental threat,” said a resident of Nalipar village. Another local urged the administration to dismantle the illegal mining network and ensure accountability.
To strengthen enforcement, the Haryana State Enforcement Bureau has introduced a 24-hour WhatsApp helpline (9878380112) for reporting illegal mining activities.
“If people witness illegal mining or see vehicles involved, they can share videos and location details on WhatsApp. Their identity will be kept confidential,” stated the Bureau.
