Importance of Gandhian thoughts in contemporary South Asia discussed
The research and development cell and the department of economics at Indira Gandhi National College hosted an international lecture on the ‘Importance of Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts in contemporary South Asia’ in online mode, on Friday.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr Ziaul Haque Sheikh from Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Dr Kushal Pal, Principal, Indira Gandhi National College, emphasised the timeless relevance of Gandhi’s principles, highlighting non-violence as a fundamental tenet of his life and work. He reflected on Gandhi’s commitment to social uplift through truth, service, equality and goodwill.
Dr Ziaul Haque Sheikh articulated the pressing need for countries in South Asia, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan to embrace Gandhi’s philosophy. He pointed out that the region’s political instability largely stemmed from the inadequate application of Gandhi’s concept of Sarva Dharma Siddhant, which promoted universal respect and understanding. Dr Sheikh urged the nations to adopt these enduring principles to foster stability and progress.
The programme coordinator, Dr Yashpal Singh, said this lecture underscored the continued importance of Gandhi’s teachings in addressing contemporary challenges faced by South Asia, inspiring participants to reflect on these critical themes.
Dr Romesh Singh Bhal, Dr Harneet Kaur, Sunita Rani, Dr Neeru Bala, and Dr Naveen Kumari also attended the event.
