A beleaguered Congress was at the receiving end of wit, sarcasm and barbs of CM Nayab Singh Saini, who chose the reply to the Governor’s address to score brownie points over the Congress, and pat his government on the back for 'unprecedented' development, in the Assembly today.

However, the Congress members were not physically present in the House to listen to Saini’s almost three-hour ‘monologue’ as they had already staged a walkout under ex-CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, protesting that Saini was not restricting himself to giving a reply on the Governor's address, but was delivering a speech on the government's achievements.

With no disruptions, an elated Saini had a field day tom-tomming double-engine government’s ‘pro-poor’ initiatives over the past 10 years. “The Congress has collapsed due to its flawed policies and people have lost faith in the party. Congress ke paas na neeti hai, na niyat hai, aur na netratav hai (Congress lacks policy, intent, and leadership)," he alleged.

In his speech, interspersed with couplets, Saini asserted how the BJP government undertook a systemic change in Haryana after forming the government in 2014.

Lauding the ‘no kharchi, no parchi’ in government recruitment, Saini claimed that during the 10-year tenure, the Congress provided government jobs to only 86,000 youths, while over 1.77 lakh eligible youths got jobs during the BJP regime. The common entrance test (CET) to provide Group C and D jobs to the youths would be held in May, he said.

Listing government’s achievements in diverse fields, including agriculture, education, sports and youth welfare, Saini took exception to the Congress walking out, saying that the Opposition lacked the ability to listen to the truth.

He said the results of the recent municipal elections had proved people’s faith in the BJP government.

'Cong knee-deep in corruption'

"The Congress is knee-deep in corruption. On account of its ill-conceived policies, the party is in bad shape. That is why they scored zero in the MC poll."

— Nayab Singh Saini, CM

'Govt telling lies'

“The BJP government first used the Governor’s address to tell lies. Today, the CM resorted to telling more lies to hide the misinformation in the Governor’s address.”

— Bhupinder Hooda, a former CM
