India targets 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030: Anil Vij
Energy Minister Anil Vij on Thursday said India had set ambitious clean energy targets, aiming for 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, in line with the Panchamrut Goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP-26 in Glasgow.
“These include achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030, meeting 50% of energy needs through renewables, reducing projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes, cutting carbon intensity by 45% from 2005 levels, and achieving net zero by 2070,” Vij said.
He said green energy would play a pivotal role in realising the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a developed nation by 2047. “India’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2070 is central to this mission,” the minister said.
Vij highlighted India’s clean energy strides, including the establishment of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), headquartered in Gurugram, which now unites over 120 nations under the vision of One Sun, One World, One Grid. He pointed out that India’s installed solar capacity had crossed 119 GW in 2025, making it one of the top five nations globally.
On Haryana’s contribution, Vij said the state had already installed over 2.1 GW of solar capacity, with rooftop solar expanding rapidly across homes, industries, and institutions. “As of July 2025, Haryana’s total installed and contracted renewable capacity has reached 6,264 MW, representing 38.6% of its total generation capacity, with solar contributing nearly 2,200 MW,” he said.
He also underlined the success of the PM-KUSUM scheme, under which more than 1.65 lakh solar irrigation pumps had been distributed, reducing costs for farmers and cutting emissions.
Vij further noted that Haryana was preparing to play a leading role in India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. “With its proximity to the NCR, the state has drafted a Green Hydrogen Policy targeting production of 250 KTPA of green hydrogen and 2 GW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity by 2030, to support industrial decarbonisation, energy security, and exports,” he said.
The minister shared these details while meeting a high-level delegation from the Philippines in Ambala, led by Jenny Lin Granados Maaño, co-founder and president of SUNSMART Solar Power Technology Inc., and Dr Kabir KV, CEO of ANPM.
