The state government-owned Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Hospital at Chhainsa village in the district is likely to begin Indoor Patient Department (IPD) services next month. The lack of a no-objection certificate (NOC) and some other facilities had created hurdles in the operations of the 400-bed hospital.

While the Emergency facility had been started in April, it failed to begin the IPD due to the lack of various clearances, including NOC from the fire department, say sources. The hospital had become functional in 2021-22 after the government had taken over a private institution and carried out restoration work. That institution had got closed down due to financial issues in 2015.

Though the OPD services took off in July 2022, the facility of admittance of patients in the hospital remained on hold due to the non-fulfilment of conditions. The shortcomings surfaced after officials of the departments concerned conducted a visit and asked the authorities to remove the discrepancies.

The department had to carry out some of the works, including construction of staircases, it is reported. "With infrastructure for starting the IPD services ready, day-care facilities were already being provided," said an official, adding that up to 200 patients had been reporting at the OPD and the number would rise further in view of the various facilities, including pathological tests at nominal charges.

The authorities have also written to the district administration and the departments like transport to increase the frequency and number of buses on the route to help patients and their attendants visiting the hospital for treatment from across the district.

The demand to set up a Critical Care Unit, on the pattern of the Trauma Centre, to provide treatment to patients in a critical condition following accidents, and the issue of shortage of specialist doctors has also been taken up with the state government, it is claimed.

An amount of Rs 47.25 crore has been spent on the construction and repair works in the institution in the past four years. Located about 20 km from the district headquarters, this is the second government institution, after the ESIC Medical College and Hospital here. It was started after the state government took over an abandoned private institution in 2015. With the first batch of 100 students for the MBBS course admitted in 2022, the third batch of the students joined the college this year.

Dr BM Vashisht, Director of the hospital, said the IPD services were expected to be started next month as all norms had been complied with.
