SGPC chief Gobind Singh Longowal today said the hospital at the Miri Piri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Shahabad would be upgraded to a 300-bed hospital and all latest facilities would be provided to patients at affordable rates. He was speaking to mediapersons after inaugurating an MRI machine at the institute.

He said, “The MRI facility has been provided at the hospital at a cost of Rs 6 crore and soon, a CATH lab will also be introduced at the hospital. At present, the hospital has 50 beds, but it will be upgraded to a 300-bed hospital.”

However, he dodged a question regarding the election of the new president of the SGPC and if he was looking for a third term. Longowal said, “The party (SAD) and SGPC members will decide who the next president will be.” The new president will be selected at the general house meeting on November 27.

On being asked about the efforts being made to resolve the matter between the SGPC and Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee regarding the formation of HSGMC, he said, “Since the matter is in the Supreme Court, only the court will decide the matter now.”

About the medical institute, SGPC senior vice-president Raghujit Singh Virk said, “Setting up the institute is the second phase of the project and it’ll be started once the hospital work is completed. We’ll start the nursing classes first, then the medical college. It will take at least two years.”

On the other hand, Harpal Singh, SGPC member from Haryana, said, “The project is going on at a snail’s pace. Health Minister Anil Vij had provided the NOC and assured assistance for the medical college. The SGPC must get the project completed at the earliest and start the college here as they have all required NOCs. The medical college will be a big relief for the children of this region.”
