‘Int’l conference a platform to discuss latest advances in statistics’

The director of the International Conference and chairman of the department of statistics and operational research, Kurukshetra University, Prof Mukender Singh Kadyan said the international conference on ‘Innovative trade in statistics, optimisation and data science’ had emerged as an important academic platform.

On the second day of the three-day international conference, Kadyan said, “At the conference, global level academicians, researchers and industry experts are discussing the latest advances, trends and challenges in the interdisciplinary fields of statistics, optimisation and data science.

The conference is being organised by the department of statistics and operational research, Kurukshetra University, in conjunction with the 44th Annual Convention of Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) and the eighth Convention of Indian Association for Reliability and Statistics (IARS).

The speakers, while addressing the gathering, on the second day highlighted current research and future applications.

Prof SC Malik, president, IARS and ISPS, said the event was providing a unique opportunity to combine theoretical developments and practical applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, reliability modeling, and computational statistics.

Prof Ramakrishnan Ramanathan from UAE presented innovative solutions for reducing food wastage through data science and AI. Prof Raj Srinivasan (Canada) discussed epidemic modeling on networks, while Prof Nilesh Kumar (South Korea) shared his insights on nested orthogonal latin hypercube designs for high-dimensional data.

Prof Ashish Sen Gupta (ISI, Kolkata) spoke about flexible distribution models for high volatility data. Prof David Hanagal (SPPU, Pune) presented joint geometric shared frequency models. Similarly, Prof MB Rao from USA, Prof Thomas Mathew, Dr Vinod Kumar Chauhan, Prof Shesh N Rai, Prof A Krishnamurthy, Prof C Uma Shankar, Prof Singara Singh, and Prof Anoop Chaturvedi shared their views on various topics.

Prof AM Mathai (Canada) discussed fractional calculus and statistical distribution theory. Several awards were presented on the second day of the conference to encourage research and innovation including ISPS Best Research Paper Award, IARS Best Research Paper Award and AR Kamat Best Thesis Award.

Prof Mahasingh Poonia, director, public relations, Kurukshetra University, said technical sessions and student competitions were the highlight of the conference which included diverse technical sessions covering more than 25 major topics. To encourage student participation, teams from leading institutions presented their projects, which provided the students guidance and inspiration from global experts. The three-day conference will conclude on Monday and the conference will prove to be a milestone in advancing the integration of statistics, optimisation and data science to solve real-world problems.
