International conference Innovative trends in statistics begins at KU
A three-day international conference on "Innovative trends in statistics, optimisation, and data science", organised by the department of statistics and operational research, Kurukshetra University, started on Saturday.
The conference is being orgainsed in conjunction with the 44th annual convention of Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) and the eighth Convention of Indian Association for Reliability and Statistics (IARS).
The chief guest, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, said data science played an important role in solving global problems. Statistical data was the fuel of the future and for the correct solution of the problem, there was a need to present the data in the correct form from a research perspective so that global problems could be solved on a priority basis.
Sachdeva said statistics and data science made important contribution to health services, finance, business, science, good governance works, environment and various technical surveys. Problems related to traffic jams to environmental pollution in big cities could be solved by conducting surveys through data science. During the Covid period, the global pandemic was dealt with by identifying infection rates and hot spots through data science.
He said the conference would be successful in proving its significance in relation to the global scenario by reducing the theoretical and practical distances. He called on the department of statistics of the KU to start new programmes on data analytics under the PG programme.
Guest of honour Prof Kunio Shimizu from Japan emphasised the research area of directional statistics and said such conferences set new dimensions at the global level. He also said that organising such conferences was important to establish deeper relations between India and Japan. He encouraged the future teachers to make innovation in data science.
The keynote speaker, Prof AK Verma from Norway talked about technological revolution shaping today's world with AI and machine learning.
President, ISPS and IARS Prof SC Malik elucidated the role and objectives of these two associations.
IARS announced Life Time Achievement Awards for Prof Ajit Kumar Verma (Norway) for his contribution in the fields of technological safety and artificial intelligence, Prof TES Raghavan (USA) in the field of linear and non linear theory, Prof Yogendra Yogendra P Chaubey (Canada) in the field of estimation theory, Prof Shesh N Rai (USA) in the field of survival analysis and clinical trials, Prof Neeraj Mishra (IIT Kanpur) in the field of applied probability, Prof PC Jha (DU Delhi) in the field of optimisation and ISPS announced the Distinguished Statistician Award for Prof Somesh Kumar (IIT Kharagpur) in the field of statistical inference. A souvenir of the conference was also released during the inaugural session.
At the beginning of the conference, tributes were paid to former Chief Minister OP Chautala and the cultural events were cancelled.
