Prof Dinesh Kumar, Dean (Academic Affairs), Kurukshetra University (KU), said statistics were the backbone of data science, and in the current scenario, no field, including medicine, science, research, and biology, could progress without the application of statistics and data science.
He was addressing a gathering on the valedictory function of a three-day international conference on ‘Innovative Trends in Statistics, Optimisation, and Data Science’ (IC-ITSODS-2024), organised by the Department of Statistics and Operational Research, KU.
The international conference was organised in conjunction with the 44th annual convention of the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) and the 8th convention of the Indian Association for Reliability and Statistics (IARS).
Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva congratulated the organising team of the conference and said the conference achieved its goal of dissemination of knowledge and experience proficiently.
Prof Dinesh said data analysis and statistics had a remarkable contribution for NIRF ranking and NAAC evaluation in educational institutions.
Prof P Rajasekhara Reddy from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, said a data science centre building was being constructed with the help of Tirupati Temple, and workshops would be organised for researchers there. Along with this, he talked about signing MoUs regarding the centre with various universities.
IARS and ISPS president, Prof SC Malik, and conference director Prof MS Kadyan also addressed the valedictory session.
During the event, Prof K Srinivasa Rao Best Researcher Award was given to Prof Gajendra Kumar Vishwakarma of IIT-Dhanbad, Prof CR Rao Gold Medal was given to Dr Suchandan Kayal of NIT-Rourkela, Prof AR Kamat Best Thesis Award was given to Dr Anjana Mondal of IIT-Tirupati.
Organising secretary of the conference, Dr Jitender Kumar, presented the conference report and said the conference hosted 22 plenary sessions, 47 invited sessions, and 43 technical sessions, with over 400 research paper presentations and distinguished resource persons from 15 countries alongside scholars from 26 states.
