Within hours of "sending" Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave in connection with the suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi on Tuesday morning issued orders cancelling all events planned across the state to mark the first anniversary of the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government on October 17.

Rastogi conveyed the decision to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) through an official message, with specific mention of Sonepat district. “There will be no one-year completion function either in Sonepat or in any other district on October 17,” the Chief Secretary stated. He also said the IAS Association would not host its customary Diwali dinner this year.

This decision marks a significant development in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelling his scheduled visit to Sonepat on October 17, where he was to address the 'Jan Vishwas – Jan Vikas' programme at Rai Education City. The event was intended to showcase the government’s achievements over the past year. The information about cancellation of the PM’s visit came when the BJP government was in a process to finalise all preparations for a massive show.

Sources claimed that the Prime Minister’s decision to skip the event comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the autopsy of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and growing public pressure on the Saini government to meet the demands of the deceased officer’s family.
