Kurukshetra, June 14
The fuel station being run by the district jail inmates at Peepli-Kurukshetra University road will now function for 24 hours. As of now, the fuel station was being operated between 7 am to 7 pm. The new night shift will be operated by volunteer jail wardens.
The fuel station was the first in the state to be operated by jail inmates. It was inaugurated on May 31 by Haryana Power and Jail Minister Ranjit Chautala. The average sales of the station has been around Rs 6 lakh per day. After 24-hour service resumes, the Prison Department expects daily sales to touch Rs 10 lakh.
The Jail Superintendent, Somnath Jagat, said, “It has been decided by the higher authorities to increase the timing of the filling station to increase the sales. Directions have been received from Director General (DG) (Prisons) Mohammad Akil in this context. While the inmates will continue to work from 7 am to 7 pm, the volunteer wardens will operate the filling station from 7 pm to 7 am.”
