A majority of the teaching staff of the JC Bose University of Science and Technology here today went on a fast after 16 teachers were denied promotions by the university authorities.

The dharna, organised by the JC Bose Faculty Association (JUFA), represents the interests of the teaching staff against the alleged failure of the authorities in promoting the teachers as per the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS).

Accusing the authorities of acting in an arbitrary manner and in defiance of rules, a JUFA spokesperson said no breakthrough has come in the matter of agitation that has affected studies in the university. He said the agitating faculty members sat on a hunger strike in front of the office of the Vice-Chancellor. The crisis had escalated as three more such teachers were denied promotions during the university’s executive council meeting on Thursday, he added. He further said the teachers would continue their agitation till their demands were met.

JUFA President Sanjay Kumar appealed to deans and chairpersons of the university to show solidarity with the teachers.
