A 26-year-old youth from Barah Kalan village of Jind district was shot dead by a US native after an altercation in California.

According to his family in the village, Kapil had travelled to the US three years ago via the donkey route, by paying around Rs 45 lakh. He entered the US in 2022 after crossing through Panama’s jungles and scaling the Mexico border wall. He was subsequently arrested but released after due legal process.

He was working as a security guard there. Village sarpanch Suresh Gautam said Kapil stopped a native from urinating outside the premises, which led to an argument — and the man shot him. Kapil died on the spot.

The family was informed by a relative settled in the US. The sarpanch said they would meet the deputy commissioner on Monday and demand that the body be brought back to India.
