JJP marks resentment with garbage dumping near Brahma Sarovar

Unhappy with the presence of a garbage dumping ground near Brahma Sarovar, Jannayak Janta Party leaders on Tuesday marked their resentment and threatened to dump the garbage in front of the municipal council’s office if the dumping ground was not shifted in a week.

JJP leader Yogesh Sharma had given a call to lock the gates of the dumping ground on Tuesday. However, to stop him and maintain the law and order situation, the police force was deployed near the dumping ground.

Yogesh Sharma said, “Kurukshetra is a religious city and lakhs of tourists and devotees reach here to pay obeisance every year. But due to the wrong policies and poor decision-making, a dumping ground has been established near Brahma Sarovar. While it presents a poor picture of the religious city, it has been an ordeal for the residents too as it emits a foul smell. As per the call given, we reached there to permanently lock the dumping ground, but the police were deployed, the gate was already locked and we were stopped.”

“However, after we expressed resentment the Executive Officer of the Thanesar Municipal Council reached there and claimed that the municipal council had been looking for a site to shift the dumping ground, but we have been hearing the same excuse from a long time. The officer said a five-acre land was required for the dumping ground and sought our cooperation. We have also assured that we are ready to cooperate but the municipal council should ensure that a solid waste management plant is also established to manage the garbage”, he added.

The JJP leader said the matter was also raised with the district administration and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in the past but to no avail. The BJP government makes big claims about development in Kurukshetra, but the dumping ground near Brahma Sarovar shows how serious the government was about developing Kurukshetra as a tourist destination.

Last month, JJP leader Digvijay Singh Chautala, during his Kurukshetra visit, had also visited the dumping ground and expressed disappointment with the garbage dumps near the Brahma Sarovar.

Yogesh said, “We have given an ultimatum to the Thanesar Municipal Council that if the dumping ground is not shifted in a week, the JJP will launch an agitation, hold protest marches in the city, and dump the garbage in front of the municipal council.”

Meanwhile, Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Rajesh Kumar said, “Due to non-availability of land and no other option available, a dumping ground was established here. Sincere efforts are being made to get a piece of land so that the dumping ground is shifted; however, a suitable land was yet to be identified. As soon as a land is identified, the dumping ground will be shifted.”
