With an aim to detect prognosis of cancer in patients and the course of treatment, the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) here has geared up to start an immunohistochemistry (IHC) diagnosis facility. What is IHC

  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is an important part of the Pathology Department
  • It is a method to detect different kinds of molecules in various types of cells which can help in recognising cancer, so that proper treatment of that particular type of cancer can be started
  • At present, the medical college is dependent on biopsy test, which is an invasive procedure
  • The IHC is an advanced test which will help doctors in clearly identifying a particular treatment for the ailment

“The facility will be started from the Pathology Department, for which laboratory technicians have already been imparted training. Procurement of re-agents is under process,” said Dr MK Garg, Director, KCGMC.

He emphasised the importance of staying at the forefront of medical technology to better serve patients. He highlighted the role of IHC in not only diagnosing cancer but also predicting treatment responses and determining prognosis. He claimed that it was a cutting-edge technology aimed at enhancing cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is an advanced technique in the management of cancer.

“The survival rate of cancer patients has improved in India as we are adopting new technologies not only for diagnosis but also for treatment. Now, we are also going to start it at the KCGMC. The IHC is a widely used technology to help the doctors in deciding the prognosis and type of therapy to be given to patients,” the director maintained.

Presently, the doctors of the medical college detect cancer with the help of biopsy. The new technology will be an additional facility for the benefit of the patients, the director maintained.

“Once operational, this facility is expected to significantly benefit cancer patients by providing treatment and enabling healthcare professionals to monitor treatment plans more effectively,” he added.
