With the aim at boosting healthcare infrastructure, the authorities of Kalpana Chalwa Government Medical College (KCGMC) are planning to expand facilities at the medical college. They have floated two tenders for the construction of two projects in the second phase. This is being done to meet the demand of medical education and community services. The authorities are hopeful that the work will be allotted soon for both projects.

To be developed on 10 acres

  • 10 acres, where an old record room and old court were previously located, will be developed under the second phase
  • This step will not only increase the residential accommodation for both students and faculty members but also improve the health infrastructure
  • A tender of Rs 71 crore has been floated for the construction of hostels for boys and girls, an animal house and Type-6 houses
  • Another tender, at an estimated cost of Rs 82.55 crore, has been floated for the construction of a basement, Type-7 and Type-8 houses, adding new facilities in residential accommodation and other amenities on the premises

They claim that this step will not only increase the residential accommodations for both students and faculty members but also improve the health infrastructure. A tender of Rs 71 crore has been floated for the construction of hostels for boys and girls, an animal house and Type-6 houses, while another tender at an estimated cost of Rs 82.55 crore has been floated for the construction of a basement, Type-7 and Type-8 houses, adding new facilities in residential accommodation and other amenities on the premises. Ten acres, where an old record room and old court were previously located, will be developed under the second phase.

“We have floated two tenders for the second phase, and we are hopeful that the agency will be finalised soon and thereafter, the work will start,” said Dr MK Garg, Director of the KCGMC.

Under the second project, the KCGMC will also construct a clubhouse for relaxation and recreation. Additionally, sports facilities will be included on the campus, fostering a culture of health and vitality among the students and faculty members, said the Director.

Renovation of lecture halls, along with site development, will also be undertaken, which will help in creating an optimal learning environment conducive to academic excellence and innovation, Dr Garg added. The landscaping initiative aims at creating aesthetically pleasing surroundings.

The KCGMC had floated tenders four times, but it could not find any agency to execute the work of the second phase, forcing the authorities to float split tenders. In the earlier tenders, there was a provision for the construction of a 300-bed additional hospital — including a 150-bed trauma centre and 20 beds for prisoners — which would increase the number of beds from 536 to 836 at present.

Sources claim that a third tender is likely to be floated for the remaining construction soon.
