Karnal achieves 87.25% conviction rate in narcotics cases
The timely submission of challans and evidence by the Karnal police along with strong arguments and trial by the public prosecutors has resulted in an impressive conviction rate in narcotics-related cases under the NDPS Act. As per the annual report of 2024, Karnal district has recorded a conviction rate of 87.25 per cent in such cases. The data highlights the commitment of the authorities to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse through stringent enforcement of anti-narcotics laws.
As per the data, 178 out of 204 cases resulted in convictions, holding 220 persons accountable. Most cases involved possession of medium to large quantities of narcotics.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) Dr Sushil Kumar Garg has convicted 60 accused in 51 cases heard in his court, ensuring a 100 per cent conviction rate in his court.
A court of ADJ Rajnish Kumar Sharma has convicted the criminals in 16 cases out of 23, while the court of ADJ Anil Kumar convicted the criminals in 38 cases out of 44 cases, said Dr Pankaj Saini, Deputy Director of Prosecution and District Attorney Karnal.
Giving more details, he said the court of ADJ Mohit Aggarwal convicted criminals in 41 out of 47 cases, while a court of ADJ Rajneesh Kumar convicted people involved in NDPS cases in 31 cases out of 35, and a court of ADJ Ramawatar Pareek has convicted criminals in one out of two cases.
Dr Pankaj said ADJ Dr Garg is known for his judgement in the past also. Before his tenure in Karnal he had served as a CBI judge in Chandigarh and Panchkula.
"Efforts to make the district drug-free under the NDPS Act are ongoing under government directives. Our objective is to present strong evidence and witness testimony to secure maximum convictions,” said Dr Pankaj.
Superintendent of Police Ganga Ram Punia said investigating officers were being trained to avoid any procedure lapses. “We are ensuring effective prosecution of cases in coordination with the Prosecution Department,” said the SP.
