Karnal district witnesses decline in road accidents and deaths
Karnal district has witnessed a decline in road accidents and fatalities in 2024 compared to 2023. The number of fatal accidents dropped from 319 in 2023 to 301 in 2024, a fall of 18 accidents. Similarly, the number of deaths caused by accidents fell by 33, from 352 in 2023 to 319 in 2024. The number of total accidents, including fatal and non-fatal also witnessed a fall of 97 in 2024 in comparison to 2023. The district had reported 787 accidents in 2023, while in 2024, the number reached 690, said the data from the electronic detailed accident report (e-DAR) portal.
As per the authorities, during 2024, the police with the help of other departments, including the PWD (B&R), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Urban Local Bodies, and Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) addressed various road engineering issues, which resulted in fall of accidents. The police also focused on accident-prone areas and identified the reasons behind these. These reasons include road engineering, unauthorised openings, not proper marking, non-availability of sign boards and others.
The police also increased patrolling and vigil on these points where maximum accidents took place in the past three years. The authorities claimed that the check by the police on high speed, drunken driving and other traffic violations also resulted in a fall in fatal accidents and fatalities.
“We analyse the data provided by the police and other stakeholders linked to e-DAR. After studying these, we find the accurate reasons for the accidents and convey to the department concerned about any lapse if at their part. In 2025, our focus is on identifying new black spots or accident prone areas. After identifying these, we will send our report to the Superintendent of Police and also to the road safety committee chaired by the Deputy Commissioner,” said Swati Gupta, District Rollout Manager e-DAR project.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganga Ram Punia appreciated the works done by different departments in addressing the issues raised during the road safety committee meetings. “Different departments are involved in addressing the issues raised during the road safety meeting. These well-coordinated efforts will continue in future also to reduce the number of accidents and deaths. Our dial-112 teams as well as patrolling teams reach at the spot and shift the accident victims to save their lives,” said the SP Punia.
