Taking note of encroachments by households in Model Town, the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to launch an anti-encroachment drive in the area. A detailed survey has already begun to identify encroachments in the residential and commercial zones of Model Town. The KMC building branch is also preparing notices, which are likely to be issued to violators within a couple of days.

The authorities claim that the drive is part of KMC’s campaign to restore the city’s infrastructure and public spaces, and to ensure free traffic movement.

Giving details, Dr Vaishali Sharma, KMC Commissioner, said, “The survey is being conducted by the Building Branch of the Corporation to identify illegal structures and obstructions on public roads, sidewalks, green belts and parks.”

“After completion of the survey, notices will be issued to all encroachers, giving them a one-week window to voluntarily remove encroachments,” Dr Sharma said.

“To raise awareness, public announcements are also being made in Model Town to inform residents about the action being taken. If anyone fails to remove encroachments within the given time, the Corporation will take strict action and remove them at the violator’s cost,” she warned.

She reiterated the Corporation’s goal of making Karnal an encroachment-free city and urged residents to cooperate by removing any illegal constructions or extensions on government land, roads or green areas.

“Encroachments will not be tolerated in any form. Citizens must act responsibly and ensure removal of illegal structures on their own, or face action,” she emphasised.

Several people have encroached upon government land by developing parks in front of their houses, fixing grills, erecting sheds and gates, and constructing walls, causing congestion on roads. Some residents have welcomed the move. They said this step should have been taken earlier. “We welcome the initiative taken by the KMC. Encroachments should be removed at the earliest for the beauty of the city,” said a Model Town resident.
