The Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities declared their office a zero-waste and single-use plastic-free. The authorities claimed that they took steps, including replacing disposable items with reusable ones and engaged employees in waste reduction practices.

The office was declared a zero-waste and single-use plastic-free by KMC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma. She said to ensure sustainability, directives were issued to all staff members and residents visiting the office not to bring single-use plastic items.

“Our office is now fully equipped to manage waste efficiently, with five types of dustbins installed for waste segregation. Training sessions have been conducted for all officials and employees to facilitate proper waste management practices,” she said.

Dr Sharma instructed employees not to use single-use plastic items, including small water bottles, polythene bags and plastic cups. “All types of waste must be segregated and disposed of in the designated dustbins. Disciplinary action will be taken against those who fail to comply with these orders, including improper segregation by the staff,” she added.

Dheeraj Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, said the Commissioner had directed the electric wing to ensure that all electronic and electrical waste was collected in black dustbins and properly recovered.

“Wet waste generated in the office will be composted using the "matka method," while harmful and biomedical waste will be collected in red and yellow bins, respectively. Biomedical waste from women’s restrooms will be disposed of using incinerators,” he said, adding that records of all waste disposal must be maintained. Home guards at the office entrance will ensure that no visitors bring single-use plastic or plastic bouquets on the premises.

Sharma appealed to the residents visiting the MC office to avoid carrying single-use plastic items. The visitors are encouraged to utilise the dustbins provided within the office premises for waste disposal.
