The city has been divided into 52 beats, and each beat has a supervisor to monitor the cleanliness process across the area. The supervisors will make efforts to transform their beats into the cleanest and most beautiful one, following which the winning beat will be awarded.

It was disclosed by MC Commissioner Vaishali Sharma. She chaired a meeting of officials and informed them about the parameters to decide the cleanest and most beautiful beat of the city. A team will inspect the beats participating in the competition.

“A beat-wise cleanliness competition will begin on Monday. Daily inspections will be conducted by MC teams to monitor cleanliness and evaluate the output of workers. The best-performing beat supervisors and their teams will be rewarded and honoured,” she added.

Sharma said the recent inspections had shown a satisfactory level of cleanliness in the city and they had received positive feedback from citizens. She emphasised the need to further elevate the standards and referred to sanitation workers as ‘Safai Mitras’ (cleanliness friends), recognising them as the real heroes of the nation for creating a clean and healthy environment. She assured them of full support but noted that disciplinary actions, such as salary cuts, were necessary to maintain discipline.

Stating that Swachh Survekshan-2024 could take place in February, she exhorted all Safai Mitras to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to cleanliness work. She directed them to avoid unnecessary leave and actively engage with residents to spread awareness about the segregation of waste into wet and dry categories.

Commissioner Sharma also directed them that no garbage should be visible on roads, streets, and footpaths should be kept clean and tidy. “If horticulture waste, construction debris or stray animals are found, supervisors must report them to the concerned sanitation inspector. Garbage in vacant plots should be cleaned, and the cost incurred will be added to the property tax of the plot owner,” said the Commissioner. She assured Safai Mitras of their safety and urged them to report any obstruction or misconduct during their work. She affirmed that the MC would take strict action against those hindering sanitation efforts.

Sharma encouraged the Safai Mitras to make sincere efforts to make Karnal the top-ranking city in Swachh Survekshan and assured them that all necessary resources would be provided. She also appealed to union leaders to support the corporation’s efforts in creating a clean and beautiful city.
