In a major infrastructure upgrade, the Karnal Municipal Corporation is set to strengthen a 4.6-km stretch of the city’s outer road, extending from Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk to Meerut Road T-Point. The road will be developed following the smart road pattern, with work expected to commence by mid-February at an estimated cost of Rs 11.5 crore. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the project.
MC Commissioner Dr Vaishali Sharma stated that a tender for the project has been invited and the technical evaluation has been completed. Once financial approval is granted by the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies, the selected agency will be issued work orders. The project will be executed under the deposit work of Karnal Smart City Ltd, the agency responsible for implementing Karnal Smart City projects.
The roadwork will begin at Meerut Road T-Point and extend through Sai Baba Temple Chowk, Noor Mahal Chowk, the Sector 9 Community Centre and the market area, culminating at Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk. Dr Sharma emphasised that the strengthened road will improve traffic flow and enhance commuter safety. The construction will use durable bituminous concrete and the project will also include the installation of footpaths, cycle tracks, a central verge, landscaping, thermoplastic paint, zebra crossings and tree guards to protect newly planted trees. The entire project is expected to be completed within six months, significantly improving the city’s infrastructure for residents and visitors.
The poor condition of this road has been a long-standing concern, with its numerous potholes posing a serious accident risk to commuters. The upgrade is expected to provide a much-needed relief to daily travellers.
In addition to this project, another 3.5-km stretch from Mahatma Gandhi Chowk to Noor Mahal Chowk is also set to be developed as a smart road. The DPR for this project is currently being prepared and work is expected to commence in March.
Dr Sharma assured that the road would be designed to be citizen-friendly and environmentally sustainable. It will feature improved visibility, modern design, dedicated footpaths and cycle tracks, aesthetic lighting, sculptures, artistic paintings, well-planned roundabouts, fountains, comfortable seating areas and underground electrical wiring. She also emphasised that all construction would adhere to Indian Road Congress (IRC) safety standards, ensuring a safe and modern commuting experience for Karnal’s residents.
