Rohtak, March 7

Executing its decision to initiate efforts to unite farm leaders, an 11-member committee of various khaps today decided to hold a joint meeting of both factions of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) at Titoli village on March 9.

“Before fixing the date, we had talked to leaders of both factions over the phone. They have assured us of their participation. Our motive is to bring the factions on one platform to strengthen the ongoing agitation,” said Jaivir Singh, president of Kundu Khap.

He said since the government was not ready to accept the farmers’ demands, it was the need of the hour to fight the battle unitedly.

A sarv khap panchayat held here yesterday decided to make efforts to unite the farm leaders. Inderjit Singh, a senior SKM leader, said they had received a letter for the meeting at Titoli. The Haryana unit of the SKM would discuss the invitation and send its representative.

“The SKM’s national general body had, on February 22 in Chandigarh, formed a six-member committee to bring back erstwhile leaders to the SKM fold and discuss with all factions issue-based unity,” he said.

The members had met leaders of other factions individually and shared their concern for unity to continue a unified struggle against the pro-corporate BJP regime for winning the MSP legal guarantee and other issues. However, a response from the leaders of the SKM (non-political) was awaited, he added.

Meanwhile, the SKM has started mobilising maximum strength for the Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat scheduled at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi on March 14.
