Chandigarh, August 7

More than six cases of crime against children were reported daily in Punjab during 2018-2020, as per National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) records. Haryana recorded more than double the number with an average of 13 cases daily during this period.

This was mentioned in a reply by Union Minister of Women and Children Development Smriti Irani during Question Hour in response to a query by MPs Chandrani Murmu and Geetha Viswanath Vanga regarding crime rate in orphanages. As per the NCPCR data, 34 cases of child abuse were received from Child Care Institutions (CCIs) in the past three years.

The social audit of the CCIs by the NCPCR was carried out following a Supreme Court order in May 2017 and a report submitted in March 2020, which was sent to district magistrates of all states and the Department of Women and Child Development for necessary action.
