Kurukshetra University confers honorary degrees on Saini, former ISRO chairman
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree in Social Science at Kurukshetra University’s 34th convocation on Tuesday. The recognition was for his contributions to social and political fields.
Former ISRO chairman Dr S Somnath was also honoured with an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree and the Goyal Peace Prize for his contributions to space science.
Addressing the gathering, CM Saini highlighted Haryana’s progress in education, sports, culture, research and industry, crediting Kurukshetra University for its role in this growth. He emphasised the state's focus on women's education, noting that 79 colleges, including 30 exclusively for girls, have been established in the past decade to ensure better access to higher education.
"India aims to become a developed nation by 2047 under Prime Minister Modi’s vision, and today’s graduates will play a crucial role in achieving this goal," Saini said. He also stressed merit-based job opportunities and the need for students to prepare for rising competition.
Dr S Somnath, reflecting on ISRO’s achievements, said, "The soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon changed global perceptions about India’s space capabilities. We are now respected worldwide and ISRO has built a vibrant space ecosystem."
Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya encouraged students to become job creators rather than job seekers. "Your parents have high expectations. The government and society cannot generate jobs for everyone. While gold medalists and high-rank achievers may secure positions, others should focus on innovation and startups," he advised. He also urged students to prioritise character building and aim high.
During the ceremony, degrees were awarded to 2,000 students, 130 PhD holders, and 91 gold medallists and merit certificate winners.
The event was attended by Kurukshetra University VC Som Nath Sachdeva, State Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda, Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma and several dignitaries.
