Kurukshetra University (KU) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) to foster international academic and research collaborations. A KU spokesperson said RIS had evolved to its stature of a Global South think tank with emphasis on impact and solutions for fellow developing countries, keeping in view emerging demands, shift in centre of gravity of the world economy and India’s global role.
In the recent past, RIS had increasingly focused on leveraging the external sector for domestic economic growth, the spokesperson added.
The signing took place during the inaugural session of an international conference titled “Emerging dimensions of global south and triangular cooperation,” organised by RIS on June 3-4 in New Delhi.
The MoU signifies a strategic alliance aimed at promoting joint research initiatives, student internships, academic exchange and the organisation of international conferences and workshops.
The partnership paves way for Kurukshetra University’s participation in the University Network of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (UMIOR), further expanding its global academic footprint.
KU Vice-Chancellor Som Nath Sachdeva highlighted the university’s longstanding relationship with RIS, dating back to the 1990s.
Sachdeva delved into Kurukshetra University’s pioneering role in the implementation of National Education Policy-2020, being the first university in India to adopt it in its entirety. Sachdeva also noted the university’s growing momentum in research and innovation, particularly in intellectual property and patent registration.
The MoU signing aligns with the broader vision of the University Connect Hub Programme, launched during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 under the Ministry of External Affairs. As part of the initiative, 100 universities across India participated in discussions and seminars on foreign policy. Building on the programme’s success, RIS selected 21 institutions, including Kurukshetra University, for strategic collaboration.
