Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor Som Nath Sachdeva recently launched the One Tree, One Life campaign, planting basil seeds at the VC residence and emphasising the importance of collective responsibility in protecting nature.

The initiative, rooted in values of environmental consciousness, encourages individuals to plant and nurture trees — symbolising a commitment to a healthier and greener planet.

Sachdeva described the campaign as a powerful step towards ecological sustainability. “If we truly want to change the world, the journey must begin with each of us,” the VC said, urging students and staff of the university to plant saplings in their homes and neighbourhoods, and become ‘friends of nature’.

The university said 75,000 trees would be planted over the course of a year by students of the university.

Each student enrolling at Kurukshetra University would be responsible for planting and caring for one or more trees, depending on the duration of their academic programmes.

One-year diploma students will plant one tree each, while those enrolled in two-year and three-year courses will plant two and three trees, respectively.

To ensure long-term care, students will be required to geo-tag and photograph their planted trees.

This model not only promotes accountability but also aims to foster environmental stewardship among the youth.

Sachdeva said an urban green cover was key to combating pollution and preserving air quality.

“The greener the city, the cleaner the environment. Water is essential for life, and environmental protection is essential for conserving water,” he added.

Sachdeva called on the community to motivate others to participate in conserving the environment.
