He said the Congress also lacked an organisational structure, which prevented it from achieving success despite overwhelming support of the voters.

Dangi, a prominent Congress leader from the Meham area, has represented the constituency in the Vidhan Sabha four times.

This time, Dangi’s son Balram has been elected as the Congress MLA from Meham.

Talking to The Tribune at his residence in Rohtak, Dangi said the functioning of EVMs, slow counting of votes and constant projection of BJP as the winner for several hours raised doubts over the credibility of the entire process.

“The tremendous support extended by the people gave us confidence. But it turned into overconfidence and took the poll success away from us,” maintained Dangi.

The former minister termed the defeat suffered by the Congress and the BJP assuming the reins of Haryana for the third time a ‘misfortune’ of the state.

However, he acknowledged that there was an internal discipline in the BJP. In response to a query, Dangi denied the accusations against former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda that he was trying to promote his son.

The former minister also denied allegations that certain rebel candidates had contested the elections to defeat the Congress nominee sat the behest of the party leaders.

The Congress leader asserted that he never had the ambition to become the chief minister, though he conceded that he wanted to work for the organisation.
