Ladwa farmers seek relief for crop damage

As many as 306 wheat farmers of Kurukshetra’s Ladwa block have sought compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for loss of crop due to the recent rains and hailstorm.
Rain, accompanied by hail, had affected wheat fields in Ladwa block on Monday. As per information, fields in 24 villages including Niwarsi, Sultanpur, Gudha, Sonti, Halalpur, Dugari, Loahara, Jogi Majra, Dabkhera, Gudhi, Bir-Sonti, Bhallari, Ghrolla, and Bakali have suffered the loss due to the hailstorm. As many as 306 farmers had filed claims till Wednesday. Besides wheat, mustard, vegetable and fodder crops have also suffered damage.
Deputy Director Agriculture Kurukshetra Pradeep Meel said, “As many as 306 farmers from Ladwa block have approached the department for compensation. Report of losses over 652 acres have come to light. Affected farmers can apply on Thursday too. After getting the claims, a survey will be conducted.” Vegetable and fodder crops have also suffered damage but only the wheat crop is insured.
Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni said, “The mustard and vegetable crops have suffered maximum damage and the government should give compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre to farmers.”
Meanwhile, uninsured farmers are also approaching the Revenue Department. District Revenue Officer Chandi Ram said, “Farmers of Ladwa block have suffered loss due to hailstorm and a survey is being conducted by patwaris to assess the loss.”
