As per the information available, Sector 3 is among the oldest sectors of Thanesar and its pipeline waslaid 32 years ago. Afterthe jaundice outbreak, an estimate of Rs 4.36 crore has been prepared to change its pipeline.
Besides Sector 3, Sector 13 and Sector 2 are among the oldest sectors of Thanesar. While pipelines in Sector 2 were also laid 32 years ago, the pipeline of Sector 13 was laid 41 years back.
Besides leakages, poor chlorination was also observed by the teams of the Health Department during the survey of the area following which local residents had sought action against the officials responsible for the situation.
Deputy Civil Surgeon, Dr SK Sahota, said, “As many as 99 positive cases of jaundice were reported from Sector 3. There were over 30 leakages inthe water pipelines of Sectors 3, 30 and 4 which were detected and rectified. A 15-day special campwas organised by the Health Department and the situation was brought under control.”
Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha said, “The proposal has been sent to the government by the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran and after getting the administrative approval, the work to lay the pipeline will be started. These were cement pipes and the condition of these pipes has now turned poor. The department concerned had never changed or repaired these pipes due to inadequate budget.”
On the other hand, Congress leader Ashok Arora has criticised the government for the delay and said, “The government has decided to change the line after the deaths of three people. There are many areas of Thanesar where the pipelines are in a poor condition and unfit water is being supplied. No action has been taken against the officials responsible for the supply of contaminated water. The government should ensure that at least clean water is supplied to the people.”
