Legacy waste at Bandhwari site to be eliminated in 6 months: Gurugram MC
Gurugram, July 23
The civic bodies of Gurugram and Faridabad have been directed to speed-up the process of disposing of legacy waste at the Bandhwari landfill site and ensure proper lifting of fresh waste.
This was stated on Tuesday during the second meeting of the committee constituted by Haryana Chief Secretary TVSN Prasad to ensure proper disposal of solid waste in Gurugram and Faridabad. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of retired IAS officer NC Wadhwa here on Tuesday.
Wadhwa also stressed upon the need to hold workshops for bulk waste generators (BWGs), promote waste separation at primary level, conducting social audit of BWGs and effectively imposing fines on those found littering in public places.
Gurugram MC Commissioner Dr Narhari Singh Banger informed the panel that an agreement had been signed with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVNL) to make green coal from waste in Gurugram and Faridabad.
Banger said some bulk waste generators within the corporation area were doing better waste management at their level. At the same time, the civic body was continuously taking action against BWGs found flouting the Solid Waste Management Rules.
He stated that various agencies had also been empanelled by the corporation to provide technical assistance to the BWGs. Besides, a portal had been created for the registration of bulk waste generators, he added.
Banger informed the panel that the entire legacy waste would be eliminated in the next six months. The waste generated daily would be sent to a different site, he added.
Claiming that an average of 60 per cent of the total waste generated daily was from bulk waste generators, committee member and environmentalist Vaishali Rana suggested creating a decentralised waste processing system.
