A man from Saraswati Nagar in Yamunanagar district has alleged that he was cheated of Rs 15 lakh by an acquaintance who promised to send his nephew to the United States. Despite taking the money over a year ago, the accused allegedly neither kept the promise nor returned the money.

In his complaint to the police, Jaspal Singh, who runs a clothing shop in Saraswati Nagar, said he had known Hakam Singh, the accused, for some time as the latter also owned a shop in the same area. Jaspal stated that Hakam had claimed his son was living in America and offered to help if Jaspal wanted to send someone abroad.

Jaspal said he told Hakam that his nephew, Istmeet Singh, wanted to go to the US and Hakam assured him he could arrange it through his son. “Hakam Singh said the total cost would be Rs 28 lakh and asked for Rs 15 lakh in advance,” Jaspal mentioned in the complaint.

He added that on April 10, 2024, he handed over the money and his nephew’s passport at Hakam’s shop. However, more than a year passed with no progress and the accused reportedly began avoiding them.

“When we asked him to return the money, he threatened us with dire consequences,” Jaspal alleged.
