They claimed that a handful of farmers were being given excess urea bags at the new grain market in the city.

Irked farmers said the authorities concerned should ensure distribution of urea in a transparent manner.

“Some farmers are being given urea bags in bulk, while small farmers like us are standing in queues for hours and getting nothing,” said Ramphal.

Another farmer, Suresh, said those having links were getting adequate quantity of urea, while others were being harassed.

Sensing the situation could go out of control, the police rushed to the spot.

Dr Wazir Singh, Deputy Director Agriculture, said there was no shortage of urea in the district. “Nobody is given extra. Farmers are given urea as per their requirement,” he said.

He also appealed to farmers to avoid panic buying and said they had sufficient urea in the stock.
