MBBS scam: Secrecy Branch official took Rs 30K per answer sheet
A police investigation into the MBBS annual and supplementary exam scam has uncovered a network of corrupt officials and middlemen at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences Rohtak (UHSR) who facilitated students of a private college pass their exams in exchange for money.
Sources claimed that a Class IV employee at the Secrecy Branch of the UHSR took bribes of Rs 30,000 per answer sheet to smuggle them out of the branch. These answer sheets were later returned after being reattempted by students, or other individuals. This illegal activity had been going on for the past some years, with the accused employee admitting to carrying out the operation multiple times during this period.
“The interrogation revealed that the bribe was initially set at Rs 50,000 per answer sheet. Of this, Rs 30,000 went to the Secrecy Branch employee, while the remaining was distributed among two other staffers. The first batch of compromised answer sheets belonged to three MBBS students from a private college. These answer sheets were smuggled out of the Secrecy Branch and returned on the same day after being reattempted,” the sources said.
Investigation disclosed that the Secrecy Branch official had used the bribe money to purchase a car. One of three students who benefited from this unfair system later became a middleman, collecting money from fellow students to help them pass the exam. In exchange, he received a commission from the racketeers.
The probe also brought to light the involvement of an invigilator, who allegedly leaked the exam papers. The sources claimed that the invigilator used his mobile phone to share the papers as soon as he received them, charging Rs 30,000 per question paper. In 2024, he reportedly leaked three exam papers via WhatsApp. These papers were attempted by individuals outside the university, with the answer sheets later being replaced by the original ones through the Secrecy Branch employee.
The police are interrogating employees named in the FIR registered against 24 MBBS students of a private college and 17 UHSR employees. Three employees have been arrested so far.
