Even as the Municipal Corporation (MC) has started a door-to-door garbage collection service, the practice of littering in public places goes on in the city. Taking a serious note of the issue, the MC authorities have begun imposing penalties on violators. An MC team led by Joint Commissioner Manjit Singh on Monday inspected public areas and issued 28 challans amounting to Rs 30,700.
“During the inspection, it was found that several shopkeepers and residents have dumped waste in the open. In many cases, people have not kept dustbins. Besides on-the-spot challans, strict warnings were issued to the violators. It was observed that despite door-to-door collection facility and awareness campaigns, some people still dump waste on roadsides, at public places and in front of shops, affecting the city’s sanitation system,” said Vipin Narwal, a spokesman of the MC.
He maintained that the team issued nine challans, amounting to Rs 9,400, for the sale of single-use plastic and 19 challans, amounting to Rs 21,300, for littering and not keeping dustbins.
After issuing challans, the team ensured that garbage was removed from the spot. It instructed people to hand over garbage to staff with the garbage collection vehicle. The action against litterbugs will continue, he added.
“The corporation will not tolerate littering. Field officers are gathering inputs regarding door-to-door garbage collection from houses, shops and institutions. For public convenience, helpline numbers have been issued to register complaints related to non-collection of waste. Strict action is being taken against those responsible for littering, especially when the door-to-door collection service is available. Continuous monitoring and challaning will continue,” said Dr Anand Kumar Sharma, Commissioner, MC.
Sharma maintained that considering the rising complaints of littering and improper waste disposal, the cleanliness campaign had been executed with greater strictness. As part of the effort, Joint Commissioner Manjit Singh conducted the surprise inspection in various markets and residential areas, he added.
