MC directs integration of waste collection vehicles with GPS tech
Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner, Dr Vaishali Sharma, has directed the agency responsible for waste collection and transportation to ensure complete integration of all garbage vehicles with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
The ICCC is a key component of the Karnal Smart City project. The initiative aims to enable real-time monitoring of every vehicle involved in waste management operations, not only in Karnal city but also in the Municipal Committees of Assandh, Nilokheri, Taraori, and Indri.
“Every vehicle involved in garbage collection and transportation must be equipped with GPS systems and their designated route plans, particularly for door-to-door collection, should be integrated with the ICCC system,” said Dr Sharma. She also warned that any delay in implementation would not be tolerated.
The Commissioner conducted a review of the Karnal cluster’s waste collection and transportationand processing operations on Wednesday evening. During the meeting, she stressed the importance of daily monitoring of sanitation work and warned that negligence would be dealt with strictly. She further indicated the possibility of surprise inspections across the city to ensure compliance.
Dr Sharma also instructed agency representatives to enforce strict safety protocols for sanitation workers, especially those involved in field collection and solid waste management. “All workers should be equipped with masks, gloves, shoes and fire safety equipment,” she stated.
In addition, the Commissioner directed that the pre-commercial operation date (pre-COD) waste from Nilokheri Municipal Committee must be cleared within 15 days. She emphasised that all pending legacy waste in the municipalities must be processed by May 30, in accordance with departmental guidelines.
She further instructed the secretaries of the Municipal Committees of Assandh, Nilokheri, Taraori, and Indri to have legacy waste assessed by government institutions and to begin processing without delay.
Dr Sharma mandated the installation of weighbridges at all dumping sites. “The waste weight must be recorded at the source and then transported to the solid waste management plant at Shekhpura Sohana in Karnal,” she said.
