The Congress today invited applications from prospective candidates for the posts of mayor and councillors of the municipal corporations and chairman of the municipal councils by February 11.
HPCC president Udai Bhan said the aspirants could apply to the district-level committees constituted for the selection of the candidates for the March 2 MC poll.
The party had decided to contest the municipal corporation elections and that of the chairman of the municipal councils on the party symbol. He clarified that the party would not fight the election of the municipal committees on the party symbol.
He said a delegation of the the party would meet the State Election Commissioner on February to press for its demand for holding the election on the ballot paper and not through the electronic voting machines. The issue of inadequate representation to the Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) will also be taken by the State Election Commissioner, he added.
The nomination process for the eight municipal corporations, four municipal councils and 21 municipal committees is scheduled to be held from February 11 to February 17.
The BJP had already deputed incharges for various municipal bodies to see the election process of its candidates. While it is set to be a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress in the MC polls, AAP had also decided to contest the poll on the party symbol. The INLD and the JJP are yet to announce their strategy for the civic poll.
