The nomination process for the Sirsa Municipal Corporation elections started on Tuesday. However, on the first day, there were no candidates who came to submit their papers. The Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM), Rajendra Kumar and other officials were waiting for candidates to submit their forms, but no one turned up.

The nomination submissions will continue until February 17, with the candidates allowed to file their papers between 11 am and 3 pm on working days, excluding holidays. The nominations for the post of Chairperson will be accepted in the SDM Court Room No. 40 and nominations for council members from different wards will be accepted in various other government offices across the city.

On February 18, the nomination papers will undergo scrutiny and by February 19, the candidates can withdraw their nominations between 11 am and 3 pm. Voting will take place on March 2 from 8 am to 6 pm and the counting of votes will begin on March 12.

As of now, no political party has officially announced their candidates for the Chairperson or Councillor posts. The ruling party, the BJP, is expected to release its list of the candidates soon. The main opposition, the Congress, is still gathering names of potential candidates, with a deadline of Tuesday evening for submissions.

It will be interesting to see whether the Chairperson candidate will be chosen based on the preference of the Member of Parliament, Kumari Selja, or the Member of the Legislative Assembly, Gokul Setia, as both have not made public statements on the matter yet.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala, held a meeting in Chandigarh with party leaders to discuss contesting the upcoming municipal elections under the party symbol. It was decided that within the next two days, the party would talk to the candidates interested in running for the local bodies’ elections. If necessary, the candidates would contest under the INLD symbol. If someone shared the party’s views and asked for support, the party would back them as a supported candidate.

Former MLA Gopal Kanda’s Haryana Lokhit Party is also collecting applications for these positions.

Meanwhile, the Jananayak Janata Party seems inactive in the election process, as neither party has held meetings or given instructions about contesting the election.
