Though the state government is yet to announce the schedule for the civic body elections in the state, officials and political parties here have started preparing for the upcoming MC elections as the tenure of General House of the Municipal Corporation of Yamunanagar-Jagadhri came to an end on January 7.

No development in past 5 years

The party has started preparations for the upcoming elections to the Mayor and councillors. Corruption was rampant in the civic body in the past five years and the Congress party will make it an issue in the elections. Enough development has not been carried out in the past five years. — Nirmal Chauhan, Congress leader

Will fight polls on issue of development

Development works worth Rs 300 crore have been carried out in the areas that come under the jurisdiction of the civic body in the past five years. We will fight the MC elections on the issue of development. We have carried out tremendous development work in MC areas in the past five years. — Madan Chauhan, outgoing mayor and BJP leader

MC Commissioner Ayush Sinha has constituted an 11-member committee to carry out the work of wardbandi.

At present, there are 22 wards in the MC jurisdiction and there is very little possibility of increasing the number of wards after the completion of wardbandi work.

The maximum population in a ward will be 26,000. If the population is found to be more than 26,000, in a ward then in such circumstances, some area of that ward shall be included in another ward.

Besides, the work of making new votes is also going on at a fast pace in the MC jurisdiction, including rural areas.

The civic body in Yamunanagar-Jagadhri was constituted in March 2010 and the first elections were held in 2013. The elections to the second tenure took place in 2018. However, the Mayor and councillors took oath in January 2019.

Besides urban areas of the twin cities, as many as 42 villages are also part of the civic body. The total population of the area that comes under the jurisdiction of the civic body is 5,49,622 — as per census of 2011.

After the tenure of the General House came to an end, political activities have also started gaining momentum in the twin cities. Leaders of political parties and their supporters and ticket hopefuls have started holding meetings and visiting the voters.

Senior Congress leader Nirmal Chauhan, who was elected as a councillor in 2013 and 2018 and fought the Assembly elections unsuccessfully on a Congress ticket from Yamunanagar in 2019, said the party has started preparations for the upcoming elections to the Mayor and councillors.

She said, “Corruption was rampant in the civic body in the past five years and her party would make it an issue in the elections.”

“Discrepancies in property IDs have adversely affected the lives of most of the people living in areas falling under the civic body. A fake survey war carried out to prepare property IDs and it will be scrapped after the formation of the Congress government in the state,” said Nirmal Chauhan.

She said enough development works have not been carried out in the twin cities and villages falling under civic body jurisdiction in the past five years.

Outgoing Mayor and BJP leader Madan Chauhan said development works worth Rs 300 crore have been carried out in the areas that come under the jurisdiction of the civic body in the past five years. He said they would fight the MC elections on the issue of development.

“We have carried out tremendous development work in MC areas in the past five years. Besides constructing streets, roads and providing several other civic facilities, we have set up several vending zones and motor markets to solve the problem of congestion on busy roads,” said Madan Chauhan.

He said their preparations for the elections are going on in full swing.
